Getting started in Project Management

If you are reading this, you are probably trying to figure out if project management is for you. I’ve been where you are and understand how confusing it can be. Project management is just a fancy word, if you have ever had to plan a party or coordinated an event from start to finish then you have project management experience. It’s that simple, or is it?

Project managers are individuals who oversee projects from start to finish. A project is a temporary organisation created to deliver one or more business products according to an agreed business case. Simply put, a project has a beginning, end and requirements. For a project to be successful, it must meet client requirements which are usually measured by acceptability criteria. 

With this in mind, how do you get started in project management? Although project management is offered in universities, it is not mandatory to study it to practice. As a project manager, you will require the following skills:

  1. Negotiation
  2. Communication
  3. Risk management
  4. Project planning
  5. Budgeting
  6. Leadership
  7. Knowledge of methodologies: Prince 2, Waterfall, Agile, Scrum
  8. Ability to use project management software: Notion, Shortcut, Zoho, Trello, Microsoft projects, etc.
